The Law (Road Safety 1986 until 2006)


Whoever drives or attempts to drive, having consumed a quantity of alcohol so as the ratio of the alcohol to exhale or blood exceeds the set limit is guilty of an offence. The limit of alcohol in blood and or/ exhale is allowed to the following concentrations:

Blood: not higher than

50 mg/dL


Exhale: not higher than

22 mg/dL


Sentences proposed by the law

• Imprisonment up to 2 years or
• Fine up to 1,500CYP / 2554.17EURO or
• Refusal of the right to hold or acquire a driving license for a period of 12 months or
• Imposition by the court from 3 up to 6 points or
• Whichever combination of the above sentences

42% of the drivers involved in car accidents with death victims, had a positive indication of alcohol content in blood (2002 – 2006). Approximately half of them (57%) were under 25 years old.
